So Long Old Friend!

Gerry Nicklas, 1933-2004

Gerry was everywhere!  From the Beverly Heritage to the bar at the Swiss Hotel in Singapore —Gerry cast a very wide net and he captured all of us in it.  He was a traveling party and the main event and whereever Gerry went that’s where the social meeting spot for the industry would be.  And Gerry’s social gatherings were fun, educating and often involved deep discussions and spirited debates.  Gerry had his definite opinions but he always listened to friendly discussion and disagreement.

Like the doomsday book we were all recorded in Gerry’s black contact book or etched into his excellent memory.  Gerry knew each and every one of us and almost all of our phone numbers by heart.  Gerry grew up in this industry and knew almost everyone in it.  He never gave public talks but he couldn’t be matched for one-on-one conversation and discussion.  Gerry could give his companions that rare and perfect gift—listening.

So many people can claim to have had Gerry as a mentor.  He was mostly self-taught but he was always encouraging new ideas and approaches and always willing to bring his new friends to meet his older ones.  His sage advice has influenced several generations of this industry.  Gerry’s circle included all ages and levels of experience.  He learned as much as taught and he was always wanting to learn more.

He was a friend to all and he would do anything for his friends.  The data storage industry is better for his having been in it and we are all blessed to have had him in our lives, whether we knew Gerry for decades or just a few days.  He was always there to help a friend or associate.  Gerry was always quietly working behind the scenes, shaping and changing the industry. We are sure going to miss him...

So long Gerry!  I hope you are enjoying your JD and coke at your new reserved table. Save a chair for us, there will be a lot of catching up to do.
